I was in Canadian politics for six years. One thing I learned that politics is unpredictable. No one is really in control--or knows everything.

While I see signs of things going in a wrong direction, there may be a progressive agenda in the works that I cannot see with my current exposure to American politics.

But it will take at least five years for this agenda to have an effect at the ballot box. When will enough of the MAGA crowd re-consider their political identity? This will not happen overnight.

And so much more depends on the vice-president, as we should not plan that Mr. Biden to carry through to 2028. What is the succession?

The Democratic Party is always just one step away from a scandal of some kind. It could lose a lot of its soft support with such a scandal.

With the country still at a 50/50 split in voting intention, it would be naive to suggest that this progressive agenda is a long-term process.

All these uncertainties can be fixed. But not by hoping and wishing.
