I was on our local recycling board for six years. Plastics was something we could not address.
There was a market for #1 and #2 plastics (the kind where there is a neck in a bottle). But our local recyclers would not separate the good from the bad. We got lots all sorts of plastic and had to hire people to sort it and then haul the bad stuff to the land fill. We could not break even in any meaningful way. So we just banned all plastics.
Landfill seems to be the best option. Fifty years from now, we just might be mining those landfills.
