I watched a documentary about the fall of Richard Nixon. Initially, the R establishment stood behind him, but as situation unfolded they started drifting away. I think we are seeing the same thing, but perhaps in a slower motion.

At the time of his resignation, Mr. Nixon still had support of 25% of Americans. In their minds, he had done nothing wrong.
