I watched Dr. Phil for about a year. It was interesting to learn about what other people are trying to overcome in their lives. Let's just say I too was going through some things.

But when the same patterns start repeating themselves, the educational value diminishes and voyeurism keeps the eyes glued to the TV screen.

We could argue that Dr. Phil is teaching people about mental illness. He wants people to admit they have problems and get help.

There is no doubt the episodes are being staged in some way. I have to wonder about the psychology of people who air their laundry on national TV. But does the end justify the means?

I occasionally catch a Dr. Phil show. He used to set up his guests with counselling services in their home towns. We viewers don't see that help being offered anymore.
