I would be interested in knowing about a certain campaign technique in Australia. Does Australia have a lot of negative political advertising?

In Canada and the USA, negative advertising is designed to convince the soft supporters of the other side not to vote. In other words, a lot of the campaign is designed to reduce the voter turnout (of the other side).

With Australia having 90%+ turnout (whether by cultural or legal means), it seems to me that negative advertising would not be that effective.

Related to that, do the parties do a lot of political canvassing, sending volunteers door-to-door before election day? This is to "get out the vote" from the soft supporters (of our side). Again, that 90%+ turnout rate would mean canvassing is not that effective to win elections.

One more question: do the Australian ballots allow the provision for being spoiled? Can Australians display their frustration with this kind of vote?
