I would say that the D’s risked losing enough of their soft support to give Mr. Trump an easy victory in 2020. Can you imagine a not-so-motivated D supporter to make a trip to the polls when the D’s could not use their constitutional powers to rein in this president. That would undermine their faith that democracy is actually working.
If we were to take this dilemma to a higher set of ramifications, it seems the American economy is showing signs of a recession. Allowing Mr. Trump to win in 2020 and preside over the recession will be the wedge to split up that solid Trump base. If he loses in 2020, most of the blame will go to D’s — and the T base remains solid for the next populist leader.
All this drama suggests it’s time for another system of governance.
