The 17th amendment nixed the indirect election for the senators. Now they work mostly for the political parties, not for the voters of the state they were elected in.

Legally speaking, the EC is still an indirect election. But through various electoral mechanism, it looks like a popular vote. This smoke-and-mirrors set up the stage for a possible coup on January 6, 2021.
