I’m not sure creating a paradigm of freedom vs. greatness is a good way to describe these two camps. Conservatives value freedom too.
But the insecurity aspect of both ideologies is something worthy to further. My contention is then a person decides on a particular ideology, he or she will defend it to the point of being silly. And to validate their belief, they are looking for converts to their cause.
One quote in this article struck at me:

We have been trained to paint our social issues as either 0% or 100%. Anything in between is just not possible. We need to understand that regardless of what ideology we may possess and however smart we think we are, no one — even the most esteemed Ph.D.’s — really know how things will turn out when we implement a particular social decision.
