In another internet forum I used to frequent, one contributor coined a term quite apt for Americans: he turned "John Wayne" into a verb. For example, "Fred just johnwayned his way through life and became very rich."

The underlying message was that johnwayning implied success was solely due the efforts/smarts of the individual, totally forgetting that the sucessful individual had lots of help from government, like: roads, other infrastructure, educated work force, civil courts, criminal courts, jails to keep the bad guys away, etc., etc., etc.

There really is no true johnwayne way to do things, even back in the good old days. Yet the myth is clearly out there.
