In his Foundation Series, SF author Isaac Asimov prophecized that democracy has a shelf life of two to three centuries before it falls into itself and reverts back to some version of oligarchy. The series takes us through several cycles of decay and re-ordering.

The USA just might be seeing the downward trend of this natural cycle. If so, should we really be blaming the characters?
