In his Foundation series, SF writer Isaac Asimov prophesized that democracy has a shelf life of two to three centuries--before it falls in on itself. A series of oligarchies runs a longer time before democracy is restored.

Asimov wrote the first part of the series in the 1950s and last parts in the 1990s. He was on to something.
