In "Political Order and Political Decay," Frances Fukuyama talked about the necessity of the political party to convey the desires of significant blocks of citizens. The parties would then champion these desires for their bases. Mr. Fukuyama said of all the political parties in the western world, the Republican Party has done little to better the societal outcomes for its base. He wrote this idea down in 2014, so it has roots that go back longer than Mr. Trump.
