In the province of British Columbia, the Westminster electoral rules have often produced legislatures that are not in line with popular vote. While many BC citizens tsk-tsk this outcome, they have overwhelmingly rejected any proposal to change their system — three times in the last 16 years — even though all the political parties are in favor of PR!

Nonetheless, I don’t see BC as being governed much worse than other places in western democracy. BC politicians are still subject to the same forces of democracy as in other western democracies. In a like manner, I don’t see New Zealand as being superior to other democracies because they have made changes towards a PR system.

While Western European countries use the PR system, there still is a lot of dissatisfaction from the common people there as well. We are yearning for something better, but we just can’t find the right way!

I invite you to read “12 Limitations of Western Democracy”. All these limitations exist in all versions of western democracy. If we really want to remove the limitations from public decision making, we need to get rid of the political parties.
