"Informal Rules"
Circa 2008, I was watching a heavy-metal motivational speaker marketing his wares using Facebook. He had built up a following of about 35,000 fans. Everytime he posted something, many of those fans got those posts. Then, without warning, Facebook changed the rules. His posts were only reaching a few hundred fans at a time. If he wanted to reach his masses, then was a mechanism that involved $$$$. Lesson: don't become dependent on any one internet technology.
When I finished my first TDG novel in 2019, my plan was to market it with Google ads. I have been using Google Ads for various inventions for many years with no problems, including my TDG book. Somehow Google did not want to appear as affecting the result of the 2020 election, so they disallowed all political ads. My book was deemed too political. I tried to appeal, but a small player cannot get the attention of the appeal process.
In my ideal world, there should be some co-operative business models out there for internet technology. I was contemplating whether or not to join Mastodon. The tipping feature to join was that it seems to be of a cooperative nature.
The similarities between internet technologies and feudalism is uncanny.
My prediction is that if we don't somehow gain control of our democracy, we will evolve to Rollerball society.
