The intent of the founding fathers were for the senators to be "appointed" by state legislatures in a non-partisan way. Their job was to protect the interests of the state they represented.

The Senate is no longer non-partisan. Senators work for the party, not the state or its voters.

The original constitution has been lost for some time now.
