Interesting analysis. My only issue is that it gives the impression that national leaders (like Franco) can see far into the future. They can’t. Franco’s thinking was mostly about how best to keep himself in power for as long as possible. I don’t think he was too concerned about the state of democracy in Europe a couple of decades later.
