I recall a business story of how a cosmetic company prospered in the Great Depression. They kept their beauty products at a price most poor women could afford. And "being beautiful" was a coping mechanism to make it through the depression. But spending money on cosmetics in those times was counter-intuitive.
I suspect there are more counter-intuitive aspects of masculine/feminine nature that we have not figured out.
