Interesting political analysis. Rather than looking at the personalities, maybe it's better to look at the trends.
If Mr. Trump had made his presidential challenge in 2008 instead of 2016, he would have been soundly defeated, most likely in the Republican primary (or possibly Democrat). Something had happened in those eight years. The USA had changed enough such that he was a viable contender in 2016. The man did not change, but the country changed. Mr. Trump only fit the bill for that change. If Mr. Trump were not around, someone else would fill his shoes.
Here's another trend. A little while ago, Virginia had a gubernatorial election. Thirty percent of eligible voters voted for the Republican Party, the party that looks like it is working towards a one-party state. In an ideal democratic USA, that party should have been trounced in that election for its stalling of the investigation of January 6. This trouncing would have forced the Republican Party to turn towards to democracy. But instead, the party is emboldened in its quest.
The trends are suggesting that American democracy is dying. USA just might have to experiment with a one-party state soon.
But Americans can build a new democracy whether USA gets that one-party state or continues to bumble along.
