Interesting review. But I'm not convinced to buy this book.
I'm sort of getting that the author believes that there was some golden age when young people had more opportunity. About 20 years ago, CBC did a survey on satisfaction in the Canadian workplace. To put this survey quickly, only 17% of workers are happy with their current occupation. The other 83% have jobs they really don't like to get a paycheck. I would put myself in that 83%, but I was happy/lucky that I usually had good employers.
In this modern economy, there is still lots of work that needs to be done--and that work is not personally fulfilling. There more aspiring writers, musicians, etc. than society has positions for. Some of these creative people have to get a job, but have a good hobby when the workday is done.
But I can't recall any good old days, when most of us could find our dream job.
