It all depends on the soft support.
Can the R’s encourage their soft support to vote? When I do the math, a 40% approval rating and 250m voters means 100m votes cast for Mr. Trump. I don’t think he is going to get this. Despite the enthusiasm of his base, there is still a lot of soft support for Mr. Trump.
Can the D’s encourage their soft support to vote? Unfortunately, the supporters for the losing side just might not make the trip to the polls.
Will the R’s convince the soft D support to stay home on election day? They will do their best.
Will the D’s convince the soft R support to stay home on election day? They will do their best.
Will the D’s be able to convince some of the 125m of Americans who normally do not vote to cast a vote against Mr. Trump. That is the million dollar question! The D’s probably have their top psychologists working on designing ads for this demographic. A D landslide is plausible.
But maybe it’s time to design a system of governance without all this silliness.
