Just to add some info to the Canadian example:

We implemented voter ID around 2000. Since most people already carry their ID, they had no trouble showing it. A few who did not were quite vocal about being harassed at the polls by poll workers. They got more media attention than they deserved.

Within four provincial/federal election cycles, nearly everyone accepted the voter ID rules. It became a non-issue.

For the sake of a few extra votes, the Democrats have been dragging on this issue ever since I started watching American politics. Their reluctance to better ensure the reliability of American elections gives the impression that they are more interested in winning elections than the betterment of the USA.
