Just to say that I agree with your assessment. There was a significance Russian population throughout Ukraine that has been agitating for a return to Russia since 1991. More Russians in the east and Crimea, but even Bukovina had a 10% Russian population.

As time passed, this Russian population was seeing the advantage of living in an independent Ukraine. Moscow was losing influence over these Russians.
