Linguistics is a fascinating science, albeit a rather unemployable one.

When I was learning Slovak, my text books were using the standard Slovak phonology and vocabulary. But I was living in Trnava, which has its own dialect. When I travelled to a different city, just 30 km away, it was almost like a new language. It didn't take long to learn the new ways, but the difference with just 30 km was amazing.
