Maybe when I was about 20, I was listening to a CBC radio program about deliberate disassociation. I actually tried the therapists technique. It didn't work. The I imagined me be the "seat" on a swing, with the chains at my ankles and head. I imagined myself slowly moving like pendulum, back and forth. Then a little bigger swing, then bigger.

Then it got weird. I did feel like I had left. I broke from my trance and never tried it again.
