Mike: You have made some assumptions about me that are not true.
- I belong to the lower middle class. Not exactly in a state of poverty, but unable to save anything for retirement. A disability prevents me from taking on a higher paying job. No elite on this side of the dialogue.
- I haven’t held a gun for at least 20 years. I have no use for this “hobby.” However, I’m not advocating taking guns away from others. There are sensible firearms laws that should be tried out. And yes, I agree, firearms laws should be national.
Now, the “nation of one” holds some truth. Most of whatever is wrong with today’s democracies stems from the nature of political parties. However a significant percentage of the population believe that the world can still be fixed with current democratic systems, which means keeping the parties in place. All we need to do is elect the right person. A much smaller percentage believe like you: the system can fixed with minor tinkering; i.e. referendum, electoral college, transferable ballot, etc. I have seriously considered all these alternatives, and found them lacking.
I’ve been doing this for 22 years — and have only found one other person advocating for a dismantling of the political parties. His name is Tony Bracks, and he is a Medium contributor. But we have different ways of reaching this objective, so we are not exactly allies.
So yes, I am a “nation of one.” I will probably be on Medium until April. If there is no traction for my idea, then I will put my spare time elsewhere.
