Most of the countries that recently joined NATO had been occupied by Russia in their recent history. They willingly accepted this protection and had to jump through a few hoops to get it.

Maybe they saw the trends in Russia--and cast their lot with the other side.

Personally, I believe NATO expansion was mostly smokescreen for Russian oligarchs no longer having unfettered access to the Ukrainian ecoromy.
