My hypothesis is demographic privilege.

If a demographic can organize itself politically, it can affect policies that benefit that demographic.

This demographic will be agreeable to having an authoritarian leader if that is what it takes to get its way. Thirty percent of Americans would prefer a Republican oligarchy than a democracy.
