My limited understanding of history was that Tito was a great social engineer. He was able to keep groups with historical hostilities working together and learning how to be friends. Had another generation been able to pass under his rule, Yugoslavia might still be intact today.

The west gave Yugoslavia western democracy. Political parties emerged based on ethniciity. The hostilities came back.

Yugoslavia may have gone this anyways. But what we did was not helpful.
