My main reason is that the Ukrainian government was starting to take control over its own economy. Ukraine was less and less becoming a place where Russian oligarchs could skim off the economy.

A secondary reason is the historical occupation of Ukraine by Russia. Average Russians feel better about themselves if Russians are dominating other ethnic groups.
