My maternal grandfather tried to follow the Eastern Orthodox religion after he emigrated from Ukraine to Canada. But the local priest started demanding a food tribute from families in his Lethbridge (Canada) congregation. My grandfather was just a lowly worker, barely able to feed his own family. He decided to leave his church.

He never joined another church. But he did send his daughters to the United Church. He felt there were some good lessons to be learned.
