Nikos
I used to feel that the Medium algos had a prejudice against me.
But when I read many well-written articles that seem to have similar traction as I (less than 100 claps), I tend not to assume that I have been singled out for less exposure.
While I don't grant my follows easily, I am following 422 people after five years. Probably half are no longer active, so let's assume I am following 200 people. With that many, it is hard for all 200 to get on my feed and entice me with my click.
And I believe the Medium feed is trying its best to put up the follows that it feels will result in a click. But, I have to admit, it is not doing a great job. For example, there is one writer who I believe can be the next Hemingway. But he does not show up on my feed--and I have to hunt him down. I'm not sure why the algos give him less exposure on my feed.
About a year ago, I did a little survey. In my "for you" feed, 70% of articles are from my follows and 30% from my interests. In my "following" feed, 100% of articles are from my follows. Maybe I should cull my follow list to get the writers I really want to read.
It is frustrating that some writers are popular but mostly writing fluffy stuff. But I think that says more about the Medium readers than the Medium algos.
We are in a creative endeavor. Supply is greater than demand. Only a few will find sustained success.
