In terms of converting lurkers to subscribers, the Medium stats (that I can see) suggest you are better than I in this regard. But I doubt you are making minimum wage with your Medium earnings.
------------
I have divided Medium writers into four categories
NOT-SO-COMPETENT WRITERS
I don't see a lot of these writers on Medium. I think they get discouraged easily. I generally don't read a second article after seeing a rather poor first article.
Having said that, I do follow a couple of fellows because they have some rather interesting ideas. But they just can't explain them very well. I have suggested a "writing coach," but they have other reasons why their work is not getting traction.
COMPETENT WRITERS
These are the people who can put ideas together and readers can understand them. Medium has many competent writers.
I would put Umair Haque in this category.
GOOD WRITERS
These are writers who have developed a flair for words. Many good writers on Medium and I am in the middle of this pack.
I took a look at a few of your articles. I would put you at the top of this pack, maybe someday moving to the top level. There are maybe 10-20 I hold in this regard.
GREAT WRITERS
These are the writers who I see can earn a reasonably living from their work, like moving frem Medium to serious magazine.
Only one writer has earned this status from me: Benjamin Sledge.
Benjamin was an American soldier in Iraq. His words can put the reader right into the battle. Just like Hemmingway.
Benjamin has a few novels out. He has won awards.
I had a discussion with him. He says he is not making enough money to give up his "ghost-writing" work.
--------
We are in a very competitive field.
I know I'm not good enough to ever be a Hemmingway. But I have a topic that no one else wants to tackle: replacing western democracy with a better democracy.
Your work has a nice logical flow to it. Words are not wasted. You know how to put emotion into your work.
But there are a lot of people trying to address similar issues. I don't know where the edge is for you .
