No, the warning shot was fired in 2016, with the election of Mr. Trump. Ten years earlier, this man would been laughed off the political stage. Something changed.

Because of this election, I was inspired to blow the dust off my "Tiered Democratic Governance" idea. I thought surely: "Someone somewhere must be seeing that western democracy is breaking down and cannot be fixed. Now maybe my idea on a new kind of democracy--a wiser and kinder version--will be given some consideration."

My 2017 presentation failed. My 2020 presentation has failed. I have got one more presentation left before I put this idea back on the shelf again to collect dust.

In 2017, I didn't think Mr. Trump was smart enough to pull off a coup. But I think he was starting to put the pieces together in 2020. Regardless, he has shown someone else that American democracy is ripe for the picking.
