Nobody wants to pay taxes — even in a society with a high social trust index. But if the system seems unfair, there’s no incentive for anybody to contribute their fair share.

I’m not so sure about this. I think many reasonable people understand the need for taxes and are willing to pay a reasonable amount.

However there are a few that point to a few instances of government misspending and then extrapolate that all government spending is misspent. This becomes a convenient way for some people to justify not paying taxes.
