We pay no federal tax on annual income below $12,000 a year. We Albertans pay no provincial tax on annual income below $19,000 a year. After this $19,000 threshold, we pay about 25% in combined federal and provincial tax. The next threshold to increase the tax happens about $60,000 in annual income. The top threshold is about $200,000 a year and the marginal rate is about 50%.
So giving a wealthy person $1000 a month means getting $500 back in increased taxes.
