One resident of my home town was a German immigrant who was a member of the occupying force in the Channel Islands. He was only 16 at that time, and spent his entire service there.

His take was that there was a truce between the occupying Army and the citizens. Nobody create any trouble and let the fighting elsewhere settle the conflict. The German soldiers only wanted food and shelter as their part of the bargain.

He did not mention any concentration camps or forced labor. But that is something he might have liked to forget.
