One thing that many religions do well is provide that sense of belonging, which is #3 in Maslov's Hierarchy. Belonging is more important than self-esteem and self-actualization.

In comparison to many other social groupings, religion is more positive than other. Some religions are better than others.

Secularists and athiests haven't yet found that belonging formula (that I can see).

The alcohol industry is a master of providing that belonging feeling. I sure fell for it.
