I find it amazing that the founding fathers had three elected institutions and two of them were indirect elections. Unfortunately all three branches of government are directly elected. To my thinking, we need to analyze why the indirect elections were not working that well.

And to be fair, I should say that most senators (prior to 1912) were probably doing a reasonable job representing their states. Unfortunately a few too many bad apples spoiled the whole concept.
