The elder Trudeau was indeed a statesmen. He could explain unpopular things in such a way that the other side could see his argument--even if they did not want to admit it. I think Canada has been led by statesmen ever since. I was quite proud that Canada's three political parties have proffered statesmen (and women) for as long as I can remember. I might not agree with their policies, but none of them would be an embarrassment to Canada on the international stage.

And yes, they are all politically conniving. The elder Trudeau knew the pointlessness of trying to appease Alberta.

In 2016, I submitted a proposal to the Government of Canada when it had its hearing on electoral reform. They didn't call me in, but I tickled that they actually put my proposal up on their website.

As I watched the hearings (the taped versions), I saw a bunch of coats and ties getting paid $500 a day to listen to other coats and ties speak on their political theories. This hearing was so out of touch with common people. I was not surprised it got cancelled.

For some strange reason, Canada's FPTP has produced a social agenda that resembles the social agenda of the PR countries of northern Europe. In other words, we have accomplished much of what they have, but with a less advanced system.

As you know, British Columbia had three referunda to changes its FPTP to PR in sixteen years. All three were soundly defeated, even though citizens criticize the imbalance of legislative power to the popular vote in that province.

It is really hard to change systems. With that and the bad optics of the Electoral Commission, I think Mr. Trudeau Jr made the right political call.

But we really need to change our democratic systems something more suitable for the 21st century--worldwide.

Follow my byline if interested.
