Several scenes were filmed near my home town. The local newspaper was all aglow.

I watched it in the cinema 30 years ago. Good film, I remember. I can still recall many scenes, like the brutality of working as a prostitute.

But somehow I missed many of the connections you were talking about. I will have to find this film again.

And yep, the wild west was not all that great.
