Stefan. I totally believe you that the Germans were not exactly united into one political mindset in the Weinmar Republic. There was opposition, but it was suppressed. It was suppressed to the point that many Germans thought either the opposition was negligible or it was dangerous to associate with. There is a whole psychology behind this movement. It might even be possible for 20% of a population to control the other 80% in this way.

Mr. Trump is indeed a symptom. I believe he himself is surprised to be the president. His cavilings resonated with enough Americans — and here we are.

Unlike our friend Umair, I think the American system is working as designed. For example, Umair is not in jail.

The impeachment process was put in place for a good reason. I believe Ms. Pelosi is applying it is the right way, waiting for public opinion to shift enough to give the process some credibility. With Mr. T’s temperment, it was only a matter time before he annoyed just enough people to make impeachment a political practicality.

Allowing Mr. Trump to be president is a good experiment. Hopefully enough T voters will realize that they got their kind of man in charge — and it didn’t turn out too well. Hopefully they will cast a wiser vote next time. But we should not count on that. We need to build a different system of governance before the next populist leader comes around. That leader might a lot smarter than Mr. Trump.

I should add that 20% of American would prefer a Trump monarchy than any chance of a D president. This group would like to control the other 80%.
