In Chapter 2 of my book, I list 12 limitations of western democracy. The first one is the "exclusive club" that politics creates.
Politics is a hard field to be in. So many enemies: opposition parties, mischievous media, and factions within each political party. Many people choose not to put themselves in that much conflict. Society loses a lot of political talent in this way.
So we can say that politics is an exclusive club. The price is the willingness to put up with this continual conflict and game playing.
