I think Medium has deliberately selected its top writers--and gives them an advantage in the feed placement. With this advantage, they become top writers.
We could say that Medium has done its psychological homework to keep its members engaged and staying with Medium. Yet there is still a high turnover of Medium members. So has Medium really done its homework?
I recall a media excerpt from the Occupy Movement. With not much to do except occupy, some of the activists were trying to build their own constitution. What I saw was a bunch of young people trying to shout over each other to get their own clauses implemented.
Your analysis of the Medium demographics is interesting. I seem to have been pulled into a group of older white males. But given the top writers--and whatever advantage Medium gives them--there are obviously other demographics out there.
How to reach a younger crowd is a good question.
Anyways, I will let your suggestion of a more subtle approach percolate. I do need to leave Medium for 2-3 months. If I come back, maybe it will be with that subtle approach.
