I too have encountered many "improvers of democracy."
I've just had an interesting discussion with a fellow from the UK. He has created a version similar to the TDG. His goal is to create non-partisan citizen panels to monitor the local MP. While I think his ideas need some more work, at least he is out-of-the-box.
Many of these improvers are rehashing ideas that that have been bouncing around for a long time. In my three years on Medium, I have probably encountered 50 articles about eliminating the electoral college as a means to rectify the wrongs of American democracy.
Some improvers, like you, are coping ideas used in other countries. These ideas should create a better democracy than in FPTP systems, but their acceptance is so difficult. But without elimination of the political party, these ideas have their limits as to how much good these improvements can be.
And I have encountered a handful who are really outside the box. My favorite is Tony Bracks from Australia:

I see no point in joining your movement. There are already many advocates for PR systems in FPTP countries. My voice won't tip the scale.
