Canadians used to get a 100% deduction for charitable donation. That ended about 1990; I remember the hallabaloo over that move.
There is a joke about businesses becoming non-profit entities that are exempt from paying taxes. Unfortunately, there are probably more than a few businesses that get this non-profit status.
Another bone I have is charities who take my small donation and then use that money to send more promo stuff to get more money out of me. I have cut off a few charities for that reason.
A few years back, I did a rather quick economic analysis of the lower middle class of the lower middle classes of Canada and the USA. True it is that American pay lower taxes. But when the mandatory Obamacare is factored in, the money going to government is about the same in both countries. We Canadians get "free" health care, but it is really not free.
