Thanks for your feedback. It's interesting to see another perspective.
For about a year, I wrote for an industry newsletter. My boss had a style I had to follow. First paragraph was a summary of main details and the resolution. Second paragraph was most important detail. Third paragraph was second most important detail. And so on. In this way, my editor could cut the less important details to fit the page. And in this way, the readers got the main idea right away even if they did not read the full article.
I can see formulaic writing in the top writers on Medium. Whether they are following a known style or have invented something new, I cannot say. But it seems that they have a formula that works for them and their many readers.
I could become more formulaic in my writing, but I don't think that it the problem. It is my main topic: the people don't want an alternative democracy at this point. Medium is not my first internet forum. And I have engaged with at least 4000 people on Medium in the past five years!
I read good articles from many writers with similar traction as I. I read good articles from writers who have more traction, but are still not making minimum wage for their work. We can find fault with their writing styles, but even if we all applied the "success formula," there still is not enough readers out there to pay us a minimum wage.
These days, I'm on Medium mostly for "reading and writing" fun. Sort of like other men my age playing golf three times a week; they know they will never find their way to the pros.
But I could still get lucky. In this celebrity induced culture we have, my unique work is one celebrity away from finding its mark.
So I just keep presence here. It's fun. And I could get lucky.
