I am having a discussion with another Medium contributor about the notion of "states' rights." According to him, there really isn't much states' rights in the USA. Yet the myth continues, probably back to those idealistic years when the American confederacy was tried and did not work.

Between you and he, I am starting to see that USA really has not been much of a federation for a long time, despite what the high school history books teach.

And the rest of the article was great. I remember an idea floated around a few years ago that all the Southern statues should be moved to a park on the outskirts of town. Those who like that history can go there and enjoy the statues without offending anyone. Now that park idea seems to be unworkable as the statues are going to be destroyed.
