That was an interesting angle.
I'm a fan of nuclear energy because it can provide a big base load of electricity. But if there are too many of these base loads, then, for sure, it is an impediment to bringing new sources online.
My understanding is that nuclear plants do have some leeway to adjusting their supply to the grid. But they probably cannot drop their supply to 25% to 50% of maximum capacity in a timely way.
As for waste, there are good solutions. But the anti-nuclear have forced the industry to adopt perhaps the worst solution: the storing on site using cooling tanks.
For sure, the government subsidies to the nuclear industry also destabilize the free market. But I suspect the renewables are also subsidized. Maybe you have some statistics about $ubsidy per MW-hr?
