That’s a little different take on the topic of Russian influence: societal polarization as opposed to voter influence. It would be interesting to be fly on the wall in the back rooms of the Kremlin to see if the meddlers were truly thinking in that way. Somehow, I don’t think they are that forward looking. And I think USA was going in the direction of polarization without any help from the Russians.
Anyways, we are in the days where anyone can set up a Google ads or Facebook ad campaign and put up ads for an election. Given the tight race in American politics, influencing 100,000 votes in the right states will affect who is and is not the president. I’m not sure how you can stop this.
If we don’t want this kind of influence, then we need to consider alternatives. I have an alternative system of governance where social media campaigns have zero effect on the elections.
But my experience is that people would prefer to write and read articles about Russian influence than to consider my alternative.
It’s a strange world.
