The constitution was designed for 13 states on the eastern seaboard circa 1800. We should not be surprised that it might not fit well anymore.
While the original intentions of how the president and senators have been corrupted, so too are the intentions for the selection for supreme court justices. Today, partisanship is more important than competence in law. Another sign that the constitution (not just the electoral college) is arcane. But it's politically incorrect to say this.
There is a great amending formula to change all that. But it hasn't been used for more than 50 years. I don't see any possibilities of that formula being enacted any time soon for any reason.
You want "one more branch". It's time for Americans to build a new kind of democracy.
